The Northern Opry Project is presenting a major country music event: The Grand Ol' Northern Opry, at the Yukon Arts Centre. It is in the spirit of the Grande Ole Opry and Prairie Home Companion radio shows. Along with the headliner and Grand Ole Opry veteran, star and Grammy Award winner, Laurie Lewis with Tom Rozum, the event will feature the Juno Award winning Opry Band Ensemble led by Bob Hamilton to back up various award winning Yukon artists including Kevin Barr, Ecka Janus, Kim Barlow, Brandon Isaak, Sylvie Painchaud, Art Johns and Nola, LJ Daylee, Clint Carpentier, and more, along with some of the sweetest emerging northern talent from all our communities such as Brian Leduc, Jasmine Netsena, Sally Lutchman and more. Original Yukon music is being commissioned and featured at the Opry from award winning songwriters including Diyet, Helene Beaulieu, Gordie Tentrees, Kim Beggs, Kim Barlow and more . Some of our favourite two-step dancers will also be dazzling us. All of whom make up some of the musical and cultural fabric of the Yukon and the North.
This event will be barrier free and will be signed for the Deaf community on who will be in attendance (Thursday December 20th show only).
There is also an Opry Music Camp at the Yukon Arts Centre on December 16 and 17 where music and music biz workshops will be facilitated throughout those days. More info to come.

The Northern Opry Project is a country music collective which is the brain child of Kim Beggs (Yukon artist and organizer) and Dale Harnish (spear-header of Frostbite's Cafe Degelee, co-orgainzer of Fest Fest, and is also famous Burnt Toast brunch chef). There will be a big Opry two-night show taking place on Winter Solstice, December 20 and 21, 2012, at the Yukon Arts Centre. There will also be an educational component to it which involves workshops and mentoring and will be in the form of a two day camp. The whole project takes place at the Yukon Arts Centre, from Dec 16 - 21, 2012 including two days of rehearsals in between. New songs will be commissioned and the Opry will be filmed and recorded.

Nothern Opry Project - two concerts at the Yukon Arts Centre on December 20th and 21st, 2012. A Country Music Solstice Celebration!
We plan for this to be an annual event. So if you aren't in the line up this year please know that you are all loved and appreciated. There are years to come. And do be sure to let us know about you and your love of country music or that you want to push your artistic envelope and Twang Your Thang!. This project grew out of a love for country music and our Yukon artists at all levels. Please do send us back your nice vibes for making this a successful and good-feeling event.
We plan to hire twenty musical artists for the project who are willing to Twang Your Thang! and who are available for from Dec 16 - 21, 2012. This year we will not be actively be seeking submissions, but will be soliciting artists instead, so we do not overwhelm ourselves. If you wish to make us aware of artists in the communities who you think we should know about, please do let us know. We are making sure we cover the whole demographic of the Yukon which is very important to the project.
This is what we know we are going to do for sure:
hire 5 established artists to write songs for the show
hire 5 establshed artists to perform at the show
hire 5 emerging artists to perform at the show
hire 5 established artists to mentor with the emerging artists
6 established artists have already been hired for the Northern Opry Ensemble (lead by Bob Hamilton)
hire 3 excellent two-steppin' duos (of all ages) who will be comfortable dancing on the stage from time to time during the show.
a dance teacher to teach the cast how to two step during the camp on Dec 16th or 17th. So we all have the dance moves to go with our cowboy outfits!
Headliner is just about booked.
We are hiring from all ages, all cultures, all northern communities. We are looking at hiring around 40 people, including cast and crew.
It's a beautiful thing.
